What Is an AZ DPS Fingerprint Clearance Card?
Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card
An Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card, issued by the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS), is a required background check clearance for individuals working in positions of trust or responsibility. It’s based on your fingerprint-based criminal history records and is essential for jobs that involve vulnerable populations such as children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities.
You may need a DPS Fingerprint Clearance Card if you're applying for roles in:
- Education (teachers, aides, substitute teachers, school staff)
- Healthcare or caregiving (nurses, home health aides, behavioral health)
- Security services or private investigators
- Social work, foster care, or adoption agencies
- Construction or real estate jobs near secure facilities
- Counseling, therapy, and community support services
There are two types of cards:
- IVP (Identity Verified Print) – often required for school or childcare employees
- Non-IVP – typically used for general employment or licensing
Once approved, your clearance card is valid for six years and mailed directly to you by DPS.
